Edible Schoolyard NYC will teach one of their most popular edible education classes, “herbs at home.” Kids will learn techniques for transplanting and caring for herbs and have the opportunity to decorate their very own small herb planter. Then, we’ll make Playtime Pasta Salad, featuring colorful vegetables, whole grain pasta, and the herbs we’ve just learned about! Kids will leave with their bellies full, having had the opportunity to eat and enjoy what they’ve made!

The 5th annual TEDxManhattan, “Changing the Way We Eat,” will take place on Saturday, March 7th 2015 at the Times Center in New York City. The event includes over a dozen dynamic speakers spanning the entire food spectrum from farming to food arts. Join in on the events and register to host your own viewing party!

This year, TEDxManhattan is also launching TEDxManhattan Adventures! These are experiences around food and farming and will include tours, meals, cooking demonstrations, panel discussions and more. To find out more about The Creative Kitchen’s Adventure, click here!

How to Prepare a Gluten-Free Lunchbox for Your Kids https://www.thecreativekitchen.com/how-to-prepare-a-gluten-free-lunchbox-for-your-kids/ https://www.thecreativekitchen.com/how-to-prepare-a-gluten-free-lunchbox-for-your-kids/#respond Fri, 14 Sep 2012 11:33:57 +0000 http://www.thecreativekitchen.com/?p=4262 Go Back to School Safely

The sandwich: a perfect lunch item for kids of all ages. Whether it’s turkey, ham, peanut butter and jelly or bologna,a sandwich is a healthy, affordable and easy option for moms on the go. However, as more and more children are diagnosed with gluten allergies, parents are continuously searching for delicious gluten-free alternatives and new snacks to replace a gluten heavy lunch box. Pastry Chef and founder of Lia P Gluten Free, Diane Eenigenburg, offers her insights and advice for packing gluten-free friendly lunchboxesfor your little ones.

“As the number of children with gluten allergies rise, so does the pressure on manufacturing companies to produce gluten-free products,” says Eenigenburg. “Luckily, many local grocery stores and bakeries are now carrying specialty lines with a variety of gluten-free foods, including gluten-free breads.”

Made from soy, rice, corn or bean starches, gluten-free breads are a tasty alternative and allow you to deliver your child’s favorite sandwich each and every day. The Lia P Gluten Free line offers a variety of gluten-free breads, pizza crusts, cookies and additional products to help make a gluten-free lifestyle easy. In addition to gluten-free substitutes, Eenigenburg suggests filling lunchboxes with fruits, vegetables, meats, beans and yogurts.

“With a gluten intolerance myself, I worked diligently to create gluten-free substitutes that taste great so I could still enjoy my favorite foods,” continues Eenigenburg. “While parents of gluten-free children face obstacles with the everyday lunchbox, there is no need to stress. Creating a fun and flavorful gluten-free lunchbox is manageable and easy!”

End oSummer Play Date fun. Host a Play Date With The
Creative Kitchen!
With the fun-filled days of summer coming to an end, and school around the corner, many kids find August filled with bittersweet feelings.  Take advantage of every last summer day and plan some special August playdates – and pack them delicious activities with kitchen creativity! In the New York area, The Creative Kitchen offers playdate and party packages, facilitated by our energetic teachers (saving parents time and energy, without sacrificing the fun!). These sessions can be hosted at any number of our partnering facilities or in the convenience of your own home. With a little creativity and some help from us, you can turn your dining room, kitchen, or backyard into a themed culinary adventure.
For those not in the neighborhood, check out some of the ideas below and get cooking on your own.
Below is a taste of the playdate themes that The Creative Kitchen offers.  And, make sure to visit our website (www.thecreativekitchen.com) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cricketazima)for a complete list of parties, classes, events and more.
1. The Colorful Kitchen
The colorful kitchen theme is perfect for getting the whole gang involved! Create a feast for the eyes and bellies, with colorful culinary creations that works well with large and small groups (think a handful of neighbors or the homeroom class from school). Little culinary artists will enjoy making recipes filled with a kaleidoscope of colors.  Recipe options include Colorfully Creative Crepes, Rainbow Rice and Polka Dot Pudding.
Play Date Tips: Decorate the play space using all the colors of the rainbow. Click here for some cool decorating ideas.
2. Royal Tea Party
Make little girls feel like a princess by inviting friends to come over in dressed to impress and enjoy an afternoon tea party! Kids will feel like royalty as The Creative Kitchen teaches them how to make tea-time treats and create themed kitchen crafts, while sipping on special kid-friendly tea. And, keep in mind, this party can’t be tailored to fit a little prince too!
Play Date Tips: Encourage friends to come dressed in themed attire. Set up a special table for the tea party and have the kids decorate their own placemats, tea bonnets made of paper plates and string, or learn how to fold cool, origami-like napkins! For an extra-special touch, check out Alex Toy’s serving ware that the kids can decorate and take home as a souvenir.
3. Digging for Dinosaurs
RAWR! Summer’s not over yet, and kids can still have fun playing outside digging in the dirt! Give your dinosaur digger the most dino-mite playdate hosted by The Creative Kitchen!  Kids participate in a prehistoric cooking adventure making dirt-themed dishes and kitchen crafts.
Play Date Tips: Kids can play hide and seek or have a themed scavenger hunt, searching for bones, footprints, and even dinosaur teeth made from cut out cereal boxes or egg cartons.
Take advantage of the last days of summer and call 718-406-7506 or email events@thecreativekitchen.com to book a playdate for your family and friends!  And, for more fun kids cooking activities hosted by The Creative Kitchen team, including parties, playdates, classes, and events, please visit our website (www.thecreativekitchen.com) and check out our complete menu of fun!
